WHEREAS, The College of William and Mary received a 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for its work to make every member of the campus community feel welcomed, valued, and respected; and
WHEREAS, presented by INSIGHT Into Diversity, the oldest and largest magazine focusing on diversity in colleges and universities, the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award recognizes institutions like The College of William and Mary that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to inclusion on campus; and
WHEREAS, to qualify for the prestigious award, The College of William and Mary demonstrated high standards in the recruitment and retention of diverse students, employees, and leadership and support for inclusion in all aspects of academic and campus life; and
WHEREAS, The College of William of Mary also created symbolic signs of welcome around campus, including plaques on the Wren Building; plans for a memorial to enslaved peoples; increased outreach to LGBT, religious, and veterans groups; and the creation of diversity action plans; and
WHEREAS, The College of William and Mary earned special recognition for the extensive efforts of the Task Force on Race and Race Relations, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Center for Student Diversity, the Office of Undergraduate Admission, the Board of Visitors, and other university-wide working groups; and
WHEREAS, as one of 95 award-recipients from around the country, The College of William and Mary was featured in the November 2018 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend The College of William and Mary for receiving a 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The College of William and Mary as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the institution's work to create a safe and welcoming campus for all students.
