WHEREAS, nurses are the largest sector of the health care workforce, and the Virginia Nurses Association, founded in 1900, is the oldest and largest professional association for registered nurses in the Commonwealth; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Nurses Association establishes standards for nursing practice, provides continuing education for registered nurses, and, through advocacy, influences public policies related to the professional practice of nursing and consumer health; and WHEREAS, the first Annual Nurses Day at the Virginia General Assembly was held in 1985 to educate lawmakers about the nursing profession and the impending nursing shortage, and, over the years, Annual Nurses Day has become a tradition with hundreds of nurses who visit legislators and other policy makers to inform them about the practice of nursing, advocate for nurses and the nursing profession, and articulate the concerns of nurses regarding health care generally, including the health care needs of citizens; and WHEREAS, Annual Nurses Day at the Virginia General Assembly promotes the nursing profession, encourages young men and women to consider and pursue a career in nursing, inspires practicing nurses to continue their noble efforts to soothe, comfort, and care for patients in diverse settings throughout the Commonwealth, and motivates leaders in the nursing profession to move the profession forward through visionary leadership, while building upon past accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia Nurses Association on its 25th Annual Nurses Day at the Virginia General Assembly; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the president of the Virginia Nurses Association as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation and gratitude to the organization for its commitment to the health and high quality of life of the citizens of Virginia. |
