          printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation
        AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in  relation  to  providing
          for distinctive license plates for members of the clergy
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
     1    Section 1. The vehicle and traffic law is  amended  by  adding  a  new
     2  section 404-y to read as follows:
     3    §  404-y.  Distinctive plates for members of the clergy. 1. Any member
     4  of the clergy residing in this state shall, upon request,  be  issued  a
     5  license  plate  bearing  the word "Clergy". Application for said license
     6  plate shall be filed with the commissioner in such form  and  detail  as
     7  the commissioner shall prescribe.
     8    2.  The  distinctive  plate authorized by this section shall be issued
     9  upon proof, satisfactory to the commissioner, that the  applicant  is  a
    10  member  of  the  clergy  including  but  not  limited  to  duly ordained
    11  chaplains.
    12    3. A distinctive plate issued pursuant to this section shall be issued
    13  in the same manner as other number plates upon payment  of  the  regular
    14  registration fee prescribed by section four hundred one of this article.
    15    §  2. This act shall take effect on the first of April next succeeding
    16  the date on which it shall have become a law.
