A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE TOMMY TAYLOR FOR HIS OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON THE SPECIAL OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, Representative Tommy Taylor, the esteemed Chairman of the House Corrections Committee, is retiring as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from District 28, which includes Bolivar, Sunflower and Washington Counties; and

     WHEREAS, Chairman Taylor, born on August 2, 1948, in Cleveland, Mississippi, is a graduate of Rosedale High School, Mississippi Delta Community College as well as Delta State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to his postsecondary education, Chairman Taylor is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and is an American Correctional Association (ACA) certified auditor, Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer Training Academy (MLEOTA) graduate and is a graduate of the National Training Institute; and

     WHEREAS, as one who always had a passion for helping others, Chairman Taylor's public service career includes effectively serving as the following:  election commissioner in Bolivar County, prison warden, city police officer and chief deputy sheriff as well as a district attorney investigator; and

     WHEREAS, in continuing his dedication to serving the public, Chairman Taylor, upon retiring from law enforcement and correctional administrator, began his service as a legislator when he was elected to the membership of the Mississippi House of Representatives in 2011, and was sworn into office in January of 2012; and

     WHEREAS, due to his extensive knowledge of the fields of law enforcement and corrections, Chairman Taylor was appointed chairman of the House Corrections Committee, a position in which he effectively led the efforts of groundbreaking legislation that became state law in the areas of crime and sentences and other areas of corrections; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to serving as Chairman of the House Corrections Committee, Chairman Taylor made vast contributions in other committees in which he served, which include:  Agriculture, County Affairs, Judiciary B, Judiciary En Banc, Military Affairs and Universities and Colleges; and

     WHEREAS, during his service in the House, Chairman Taylor was known for his gregarious laugh and warm spirit and for his uncanny ability to explain legislative measures so that all could comprehend - a vital skill that led to his successful tenure in the House; and

     WHEREAS, a man of many talents, Chairman Taylor is an active member of the American Correctional Association, NSA, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Mississippi Purple Heart Association #806 and Delta State University Alumni Association, and he is a member of Calvary Baptist Church, which is located in Cleveland, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to being a statesman, public servant, and expert in the law enforcement and corrections fields, Chairman Taylor is the patriarch of his family that includes his beautiful wife, Robbie; their two successful children, Paige and

Toby; and five doting grandchildren, Brittany, Kaylen, Lexi, Triston and Keaton; and

     WHEREAS, Chairman Taylor has indicated his plans for retirement and the members of the House of Representatives wish to express their sincere appreciation to Chairman Taylor for his dedicated service to the people of the State of Mississippi and for the personal sacrifices that he has made on their behalf:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend our friend and colleague, Chairman Tommy Taylor, for all that he has meant to the Mississippi House of Representatives and for his unmatched contributions to the people of District 28 as well as to the State of Mississippi as a whole, and we want him to know that his presence and his leadership will be sincerely missed.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Chairman Tommy Taylor and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
