2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Galesburg | ||||||
4 | Lions Club members on the 90th anniversary of the organization; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, On November 18, 1920, a charter was presented to | ||||||
7 | the Galesburg Lions Club with Judge John F. Garner, | ||||||
8 | International Director from Quincy, presiding; the Quincy | ||||||
9 | Lions Club sponsored the Galesburg Lions Club, and Attorney L. | ||||||
10 | Fred O'Brien was elected the first president; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, With 37 men present, Galesburg became the 12th | ||||||
12 | Lions Club organized in the State of Illinois, and the 109th | ||||||
13 | Club in the Association; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The main goal of the Lions Club has been sight | ||||||
15 | conservation for the past 65 years; the Galesburg Club | ||||||
16 | responded to this ideal by purchasing eye glasses for school | ||||||
17 | children, and later for people of all ages; over the years, | ||||||
18 | thousands of pairs of glasses have been bought and distributed | ||||||
19 | to those in need, with assistance by community optometrists and | ||||||
20 | ophthamologists, who charge minimal fees, helping the Lions | ||||||
21 | Club to continue this program; and

1 | WHEREAS, The Galesburg Lions Club donated funds to local | ||||||
2 | hospitals for eye equipment, hosting Glaucoma and Hearing | ||||||
3 | clinics, and contributing to a foundation project to build an | ||||||
4 | Eye Research Institute; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, In 1922, the Lions Club donated suits of clothes | ||||||
6 | to ex-servicemen coming out of the hospital; in 1940, the Lions | ||||||
7 | Club began ringing bells for the Salvation Army, frequently | ||||||
8 | raising the most money, and at times the most noise; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 1925, the first road signs were placed to the | ||||||
10 | entrances of Galesburg, acknowledging the Galesburg Lions | ||||||
11 | Club; during World War II, the Lions Club helped man the | ||||||
12 | Service Center each weekend; and in 1956 they built their first | ||||||
13 | picnic shelter at Lake Storey; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Recent fundraising events include the | ||||||
15 | presentation of a check for $5,000 to the City of Galesburg for | ||||||
16 | the construction of hiking trails and a gift of $6,000 for the | ||||||
17 | purchase of a scoreboard at the Little League Park at Hawthorne | ||||||
18 | Center; and

19 | WHEREAS, In the 1990s, the Lions Club welcomed women into | ||||||
20 | their club; the women of Galesburg that have joined the Lions | ||||||
21 | Club have served as chairs of many of the major committees and | ||||||
22 | have participated in 100% of the activities; as the Club begins |

1 | its 91st year in the community, they continue to donate, give | ||||||
2 | of time and talent, and serve others rather then themselves; | ||||||
3 | therefore, be it

4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
5 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
6 | congratulate the members of the Galesburg Lions Club and wish | ||||||
7 | them continued success in the future; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to the Galesburg Lions Club as a symbol of our | ||||||
10 | respect and esteem.
