HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Urging the governor to appoint a creative resurgence coordinator to the governor's cabinet.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the creative arts are an integral part of Hawaii's culture; and

 

     WHEREAS, the creative arts sector represents approximately six percent of the State's total civilian jobs and $4,200,000,000 of the State's gross domestic product; and

 

     WHEREAS, according to the June 2020 Brookings Institute report, The Lost Art: Measuring COVID-19's Devastating Impact on America's Creative Economy, "[t]he creative economy is one of the sectors most at risk from the COVID-19 crisis."; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Brookings Institute report also identifies Hawaii as one of the top five states that have job losses in the creative sector greater than the national average of 30.3 percent; and

 

     WHEREAS, participating in creative activities promotes healthy communities; and

 

     WHEREAS, the role of government in the creative arts is to ensure access to the arts for all people across the State and in every community; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu has within his cabinet an Office of Culture and the Arts, whose role is to promote the value of arts and culture throughout communities in the City and County of Honolulu; and

 

     WHEREAS, a Creative Resurgence Coordinator in the Governor's Cabinet would ensure coordination between the public and private sectors on creative resurgence projects; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, that this body urges the Governor to appoint a Creative Resurgence Coordinator to the Governor's Cabinet; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
