SENATE RESOLUTION 1012

A RESOLUTION

honoring the theodore roosevelt dam on the auspicious occasion of its one hundredth anniversary.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, March 18, 2011 marks the centennial of the official dedication of Theodore Roosevelt Dam, the first major structure built by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) in Arizona which, when completed, was then the world's tallest masonry dam; and

Whereas, one of the first major projects resulting from the National Reclamation Act, the dam was dedicated in person by President Roosevelt, who championed economic development by reclaiming the arid lands of the West during his administration—a concept crucial to city-building in the Salt River Valley as well as the new state of Arizona; and

Whereas, the construction of Roosevelt Dam eventually resulted in the formation of the world's largest reservoir; and

Whereas, the dam has served as a keystone to Salt River Project (SRP) water and power operations in central Arizona, providing critical resources to sustain the commercial and residential development of Arizona; and

Whereas, through its partnerships with the USBR and the United States Forest Service, SRP, the oldest multipurpose reclamation project in the nation, has for more than one hundred years nurtured Arizona communities and remains committed to the welfare of the neighborhoods and businesses it was created to serve; and

Whereas, the dedication of Roosevelt Dam in 1911 foreshadowed the transition of Arizona from a territory to statehood the following year.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:

1.  That the Members of the Senate honor Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and recognize the tremendous role the dam has played in the development and prosperity of our state.

2.  That the Members of the Senate recognize SRP as a valued partner in leveraging the region's strengths to develop and sustain a healthy economy for Arizona.

3.  That the Members of the Senate encourage all Arizona citizens to join in recognizing this significant anniversary as well as the dedication of those men and women, both past and present, who have contributed to the support, construction, maintenance and operation of Roosevelt Dam.
