SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 66
Commending Robert A. Braxton.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, February 15, 2024

 

WHEREAS, Robert A. Braxton, a passionate advocate for members of the Williamsburg community, received the 2023 Mace Bearer's Award from the Williamsburg City Council for his commitment to civic improvement and leadership; and

WHEREAS, Robert "Bobby" Braxton grew up in Braxton Court, which is named in honor of his grandfather, who built many of the houses in the neighborhood beginning in the 1920s; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Braxton attended what is now Hampton University and served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, then pursued a career in electrical engineering and moved outside of Williamsburg; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Braxton stayed engaged with his home community, and when the city received federal grants to rehabilitate Braxton Court in the early 2000s, he closely followed the project and advocated for its completion; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Braxton ultimately moved back to Williamsburg after his retirement and won election to the Williamsburg City Council; since then, he has remained active on several boards and commissions, including the Community Action Agency and the Truth and Reconciliation Committee; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Braxton has also volunteered his leadership and expertise to the Let Freedom Ring Foundation, the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg, and the Rotary Club of Williamsburg, among other civic and service organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Mace Bearer's Award is the only award conferred by the Williamsburg City Council to a member of the community and was named for the Mace of the City, a Colonial-era artifact that was used to convey the importance of municipal functions; Bobby Braxton is the second recipient of the award, which was established in 2022; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Braxton received the prestigious award at the One Williamsburg Holiday Reception on December 14, 2023; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Robert A. Braxton, the recipient of the 2023 Mace Bearer's Award from the Williamsburg City Council, hereby be commended for his outstanding community service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert A. Braxton as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for his achievements in service to the residents of Williamsburg.
