| WHEREAS, The members of First Presbyterian Church of Garland | ||
| are celebrating the 125th anniversary of their church's founding on | ||
| April 21, 2013; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Organized in 1888 as the First Cumberland | ||
| Presbyterian Church of Garland, the church took its present name | ||
| following the merger in 1906 of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church | ||
| and the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.; First Presbyterian now numbers | ||
| some 300 members, who extend a warm welcome to newcomers and who | ||
| treasure the sense of being part of a large, vibrant, and caring | ||
| family; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In 1994, the congregation moved from its old red | ||
| brick sanctuary into a new facility; stained-glass windows from the | ||
| previous sanctuary provide a strong element of continuity, while | ||
| the circular architectural design and fixtures of the new interior | ||
| serve to remind worshipers of the circle of life; and | ||
| WHEREAS, United by its shared faith and strong traditions, | ||
| the congregation supports a variety of commendable programs that | ||
| offer help to those in need; its outreach efforts include working | ||
| with Meals on Wheels, participating in homebuilding and other | ||
| mission activities in Mexico and Guatemala, and contributing to the | ||
| alleviation of hunger and poverty in the third world; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Countless residents have looked to First | ||
| Presbyterian Church of Garland for spiritual enrichment and | ||
| guidance through the years, and it is a privilege to join in | ||
| honoring the church at this special time in its history; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the | ||
| founding of First Presbyterian Church of Garland and extend to all | ||
| those associated with the church sincere best wishes for the | ||
| future; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
| House of Representatives. | ||
