WHEREAS, The Hidalgo Early College High School boys' soccer | ||
team closed out an unforgettable year by winning the 2023 | ||
University Interscholastic League 4A state championship; and | ||
WHEREAS, Following an impressive showing during the regular | ||
season, the Pirates continued to excel in the playoffs, besting | ||
Rockport-Fulton, Progreso, Jubilee-Brownsville, and Austin Achieve | ||
High Schools to reach the regional final; there, Hidalgo defeated | ||
two-time defending state champion Boerne High to punch its ticket | ||
to the state tournament in Georgetown; in the semifinals, the team | ||
posted a 1-0 win over San Elizario and advanced to the state final; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, On April 14, Hidalgo battled Palestine High School | ||
for the 4A crown at Birkelbach Field; the Pirates took command | ||
early, racking up three goals midway through the first half and | ||
relying on their stingy defense to seal the outcome; emerging | ||
triumphant by the final score of 3-0, the Hidalgo players hoisted | ||
the state championship trophy for the second time in program | ||
history, adding to the title the school won in 2009; and | ||
WHEREAS, Hidalgo was led by Reynaldo Cantu, the Championship | ||
Game Most Valuable Player, who joined Ailton Cardenas, Gabriel | ||
Ordonez, and Joaquin Rosales on the 4A All-Tournament Team; the | ||
Pirates also received valuable contributions during the season from | ||
the other members of the roster: Sergio Castaneda, Michael Banda, | ||
Anthony Nava, Sebastian Yanez, Erick Montoya, Matthew Reyes, | ||
Reynaldo Trevino, Ezekiel Gracia, Edson Montoya, Alfonso | ||
Velazquez, Moises Moya, Angel Gonzalez, Santiago Hernandez, Caleb | ||
Hosanna, Alan Espinoza, Pablo Almieda, Angel Rodriguez, Abiel | ||
Guerrero, and Franco Macias; these talented student-athletes were | ||
ably directed by head coach Esteban Alegria and assistant coaches | ||
Guadalupe Amaya, Juan Barron, and David Slovak; and | ||
WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the | ||
culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering | ||
commitment to excellence, and the Hidalgo Pirates will treasure the | ||
memory of this accomplishment for the rest of their lives; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate the Hidalgo Early College High | ||
School boys' soccer team on winning the 2023 UIL 4A state | ||
championship and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere | ||
best wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the Pirates as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. |
