A RESOLUTION

1

Designating the week of March 23 through 27, 2009, as "Family

2

Farm Week" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The family farm in Pennsylvania has, since the

4

charter of William Penn from King Charles II in 1681, been the

5

backbone of this Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, The "sustenance" form of farming has, from the

7

beginning of this Commonwealth even to this day, provided a

8

large percentage of the food consumed by the citizens of this

9

State; and

10

WHEREAS, The family and sustenance farms deliver an important

11

security component of this Commonwealth, in that in the case of

12

any disaster, these farms will be able to provide food for many

13

of Pennsylvania's citizens; and

14

WHEREAS, Many family farms have, in the past generation, been

15

absorbed into corporate farming, or the land has been otherwise

16

lost to housing and other developments; and

1

WHEREAS, The lifestyles of the families that operate

2

sustenance farms have, in the past generation, been threatened

3

by both corporate interests and government regulation, thereby

4

making family farming a less desirable lifestyle for those

5

otherwise inclined toward it; and

6

WHEREAS, Financial lending and other burdens on family farms

7

represent a source of additional detriment when national

8

economic stability, taxation and other factors combine to

9

confiscate the property used for family farming; and

10

WHEREAS, The family and small farms of this Commonwealth

11

provide many residual benefits to wildlife, including unused

12

food and safe harbors during harsh winter months, thereby

13

improving the overall scope of natural resources; and

14

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's farm produce is exported to

15

virtually every state in this nation and to many other

16

countries; and

17

WHEREAS, The United States and the world will be impacted

18

detrimentally should the family farms of this Commonwealth in

19

any way fail or falter; therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of March 23

21

through 27, 2009, as "Family Farm Week" in Pennsylvania; and be

22

it further

23

RESOLVED, That during this week, all public schools in this

24

Commonwealth are encouraged to study the impact, principles and

25

practices of family farming and how it has affected this

26

Commonwealth and helped shape the heritage of freedom and

27

property rights, both internally and with other states; and be

28

it further

29

RESOLVED, That during this week, schools are encouraged to

30

take children on field trips to engage in extracurricular
