A RESOLUTION
Designating September 24, 2010, as "Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a leading advocate for the
rights of people with intellectual disabilities, founded the
Special Olympics and was a long-time supporter of Best Buddies;
and
WHEREAS, The Special Olympics began in 1962 at the home of
Eunice Kennedy Shriver as a summer day camp for children and
adults with intellectual disabilities; and
WHEREAS, One thousand individuals with intellectual
disabilities participated in the First International Special
Olympics Summer Games, held in 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago,
Illinois; and
WHEREAS, The Special Olympics has become a worldwide movement
that currently serves approximately 3 million intellectually
disabled individuals in more than 170 countries; and
WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver dedicated her life to opening
the minds of people around the world to the attributes of

individuals with intellectual disabilities and selflessly
donated her time and talent to work and advocate on their
behalf; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania will participate in the first annual
Global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day, to celebrate her life and her
global call to action for all people to actively include and
accept the intellectually disabled; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
September 24, 2010, as "Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, The all Pennsylvanians are hereby encouraged to
participate with the Special Olympics program that serves
intellectually disabled individuals in their communities.
