| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating September 24, 2010, as "Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day" |
2 | in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a leading advocate for the |
4 | rights of people with intellectual disabilities, founded the |
5 | Special Olympics and was a long-time supporter of Best Buddies; |
6 | and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Special Olympics began in 1962 at the home of |
8 | Eunice Kennedy Shriver as a summer day camp for children and |
9 | adults with intellectual disabilities; and |
10 | WHEREAS, One thousand individuals with intellectual |
11 | disabilities participated in the First International Special |
12 | Olympics Summer Games, held in 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago, |
13 | Illinois; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The Special Olympics has become a worldwide movement |
15 | that currently serves approximately 3 million intellectually |
16 | disabled individuals in more than 170 countries; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver dedicated her life to opening |
18 | the minds of people around the world to the attributes of |

1 | individuals with intellectual disabilities and selflessly |
2 | donated her time and talent to work and advocate on their |
3 | behalf; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania will participate in the first annual |
5 | Global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day, to celebrate her life and her |
6 | global call to action for all people to actively include and |
7 | accept the intellectually disabled; therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate |
9 | September 24, 2010, as "Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day" in |
10 | Pennsylvania; and be it further |
11 | RESOLVED, The all Pennsylvanians are hereby encouraged to |
12 | participate with the Special Olympics program that serves |
13 | intellectually disabled individuals in their communities. |
