Assembly Resolution No. 380 BY: M. of A. McMahon CONGRATULATING Assistant Principal Nancy Ann Ables upon the occasion of her retirement after more than 19 years of dedicated service to Amherst Central High School WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those outstanding educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have been instrumental in developing character and academic excellence in the young people of New York State; and WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled; its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its educational professionals and the students they inspire; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Assist- ant Principal Nancy Ann Ables upon the occasion of her retirement after more than 19 years of dedicated service to Amherst Central High School; she will officially retire on June 30, 2021; and WHEREAS, Nancy Ann Ables started her career as a high school math teacher, advancing to her current role as a high school administrator where she was primarily responsible for ensuring that students meet the requirements necessary to graduate; and WHEREAS, While this work and many other responsibilities kept her busy, she was always accessible to students; her influence within the building was reflected through several popular events and programs over the years that were initiated by students who trusted her to listen to their ideas and help move them forward; and WHEREAS, International Women's Day was started in 2019 when several young women at the high school met with Nancy Ann Ables; the outcome of those meetings framed the basis for the event which is one-of-a-kind among WNY high schools; and WHEREAS, She partnered with Dr. Sarah A. Robert, associate professor and director of the Social Studies education program in the Graduate School of Education at the University at Buffalo, and Qinghua Chen, a UB doctoral candidate; together with students and the high school social studies department, they developed a program on women's issues and engaged guest speakers to educate the student body and present a different perspective; and WHEREAS, Several years ago, Nancy Ann Ables led the planning efforts for the Graduation Walk where seniors donned caps and gowns in a parade through their former elementary school; the event's focus was two-fold; to honor the graduating seniors and to have them inspire the younger students to work toward their own graduation; and WHEREAS, Nancy Ann Ables worked to establish the Seal of Biliteracy, which awards students who have mastery of two or more languages, with a seal on their diploma; it is an involved process for those students seeking the seal, many who immigrated to the United States and speak their native language as their primary language; and WHEREAS, Supporting both the music and language arts departments, Nancy Ann Ables traveled to Carnegie Hall to watch students perform, and to Bolzano, Italy, for the 30th Anniversary of the exchange program celebration; she participated in the Italian Exchange as both chaperone and host school for many years; and WHEREAS, Nancy Ann Ables was also the Acting Secondary Mathematics Curriculum Leader at the beginning of the common core initiative, a building-wide member of the Autism Resource Team, the Teacher Representative for the Amherst Central High School Building Leadership Team, and the Mathematics Representative for the Amherst Central District Literacy Council; and WHEREAS, This extraordinary educator has presented at the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State, presented Network Training Institute training for staff development, was a Common Core curriculum writing leader, and presented TI-84 calculator instruction during high school and district staff development; and WHEREAS, The future success of our State and Nation is dependent upon individuals such as Nancy Ann Ables, who have dedicated their lives as educators, nurturing our most precious resource, our youth; and WHEREAS, Nancy Ann Ables has made incomparable contributions to empowering and improving the well-being of the students of Amherst Central High School; she remains a source of inspiration and knowledge to all she has befriended, educated and mentored; and WHEREAS, Furthermore, Nancy Ann Ables brought a perfect combination of parental love and professional experience to all her efforts; with a long and successful run in the classroom, she was also an expert at supporting the other teachers as they supported the students in the classroom; and WHEREAS, Nancy Ann Ables embodies what you would want in every educator, a unique balance of heart and mind focused on the children of Amherst; and WHEREAS, Nancy Ann Ables has clearly had an enduring impact on the youth of Amherst Central High School, as well as on the community-at- large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for her impressive dedication to others; and WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to commend the efforts of those individuals who have worked to support our proud tradition of public education by providing their skills and talents to our schools; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Assistant Principal Nancy Ann Ables upon the occasion of her retirement, and to wish her continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Nancy Ann Ables.
