Senate Resolution No. 1978 BY: Senator HARCKHAM CONGRATULATING Mahopac High School student-athlete Shannon Becker upon the occasion of pitching a Perfect Perfect Game on May 8, 2019 WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical development of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of fair play and competition; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Mahopac High School student-athlete Shannon Becker upon the occasion of pitching a Perfect Perfect Game, the first time it has ever been done by a New York State high school softball player; and WHEREAS, Shannon Becker accomplished this tremendous feat by striking out all 21 batters in an 8-0 win over rival Carmel High School on Wednesday, May 8, 2019; this incredible sophomore also struck out 19 batters in a game on April 2, 2019, and in a 21-0 win on April 17, 2019, she struck out all 16 batters she faced in five innings; and WHEREAS, Shannon Becker has been playing softball since she was a young child, and comes from a family of softball and baseball players; she also plays basketball and soccer, however, softball is her passion and she throws an incredible fastball, normally more than 60 mph; and WHEREAS, Throughout the past season, Shannon Becker recorded an incredible list of pitching statistics including 0.39 ERA, 163 innings pitched, 369 strikeouts, BAA of .097, OBP of .150 and nine Earned Runs Against; and WHEREAS, Shannon Becker is also an excellent hitter with a .420 BA, 18 runs, 29 hits, 10 doubles, 1 homerun, OBP of .518, and a slugging percentage of .608; and WHEREAS, In recognition of her outstanding season, Shannon Becker was named to both the All-League and All-Section Teams, and is eligible for All-State and All-American status; and WHEREAS, Shannon Becker's incredible arm and bat helped lead the Mahopac High School Girls Softball Team to an impressive overall record of 19-4; and WHEREAS, The Indians won the Beacon and Yorktown Tournaments, and made it to the semi-finals of the Section 1 Softball Championship; and WHEREAS, These bright young women have logged in over 2,000 hours of community service, and not only excel on the field but also in academics, with 10 of 12 students listed on the Honor Roll; and WHEREAS, The athletic talent displayed by Shannon Becker is due in great part to the efforts of Coach Cristina Giansante, a skilled and inspirational tutor respected for her ability to develop potential into excellence; and WHEREAS, Shannon Becker's performance throughout the season has been outstanding and she was loyally and enthusiastically supported by family, fans, friends and the community at large; and WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend and pay tribute to those young people who, by achieving outstanding success in athletic competition, have inspired and brought pride to our majestic Empire State; and WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, this exemplary athlete now stands honorably, with just pride in her accomplishments and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appreciating the caring counsel and support provided by her coaches, teachers, and parents; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Mahopac High School student-athlete Shannon Becker upon the occasion of pitching a Perfect Perfect Game on May 8, 2019; and be it further RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Shannon Becker, and Coach Cristina Giansante.
