        CONGRATULATING  Jean  Elk  upon  the  occasion  of
        celebrating her 100th Birthday on July 22, 2023

  WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and  knowledge
to  the  increasingly  active  roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a  vital  part  of,  and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and

  WHEREAS,  It  is  the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
and recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens  of  this  great
Empire State; and

  WHEREAS,  This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Jean
Elk upon the occasion of celebrating her 100th Birthday; and

  WHEREAS, Jean Elk was born on July 22, 1923, in Brockville, Ontario,
Canada; six years later, she and her  parents  moved  to  Syracuse,  New
York, where she graduated from Central High School in 1942; and

  WHEREAS,  Jean Elk then returned to Brockville and completed nursing
school in 1945, and subsequently, moved back to Syracuse  in  1946,  and
met  the  Superintendent of the Alexandria Bay Hospital, who invited her
to work for the summer at the hospital; and

  WHEREAS, The Alexandria Bay Hospital is a house with three  bedrooms
upstairs,  two  downstairs, and an entry room used as a nurse's station,
and Jean Elk was the only registered nurse on her 3-11 pm shift, and she
and a nurse's aide served seven doctors in the area; and

  WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure, Jean Elk assisted with all types  of
medical  operations  including  heart attacks, assisting with surgeries,
stitching up wounds, and delivering children; and

  WHEREAS, With her zest for life, this  exceptional  centenarian  has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; she has truly
enriched those around her through her joyous and sincere love for others
and  through  the  profound  charm  and  wisdom  which comes only from a
fullness of years; and

  WHEREAS, It is the intent  of  this  Legislative  Body  to  publicly
recognize  those  who  have  reached  such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated  the  innovations,  cultural  developments  and
awesome  achievements  of  this  country  during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the  growth  and  excellence  of  this  great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Jean  Elk  upon  the  occasion  of  celebrating  her  100th
Birthday on July 22, 2023; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Jean Elk.
