        CONGRATULATING  Muriel  Neufeld  posthumously upon
        the occasion of being inducted into the 26th  Annual
        May  W.  Newburger Women's Roll of Honor by the Town
        of  North  Hempstead,  in   conjunction   with   the
        observance of Women's History Month

  WHEREAS,  It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those women of achievement within this great Empire State
who have made strong contributions to their communities and who  inspire
others through their model citizenship; and

  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
congratulate  Muriel  Neufeld  posthumously  upon  the occasion of being
inducted into the 26th Annual May W. Newburger Women's Roll of Honor  by
the  Town  of  North  Hempstead,  in  conjunction with the observance of
Women's History Month, to be celebrated with a breakfast  on  Wednesday,
March  27, 2019, at Harbor Links Golf Course, Port Washington, New York;
and

  WHEREAS, Since 1994, North Hempstead has held the  Women's  Roll  of
Honor  breakfast  to  honor  women who have made a contribution to their
community, or have accomplished a significant achievement through public
or private efforts; Muriel Neufeld was such a woman; and

  WHEREAS, Born Muriel  Newmark  on  February  9,  1920,  she  studied
sociology  at  Adelphi College; in 1941, she married Stanley Neufeld and
together, they raised two sons, Peter and Russell; and

  WHEREAS, Muriel Neufeld was an important and  vital  member  of  her
North  Hempstead  community;  as a tireless social justice advocate, she
fought  against  racial  discrimination,  capital  punishment  and   gun
violence for more than 50 years; and

  WHEREAS,  A  lifelong member of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long
Island, Muriel Neufeld  dedicated  her  life  to  the  greater  good  of
humanity;  as Chair of its Educational Platform, she was instrumental in
bringing numerous renowned speakers to Garden City, New York; and

  WHEREAS, Muriel Neufeld truly lived by her mantra, "if  you  believe
something  is  wrong  and  unfair, don't just criticize it, do something
about it."; she helped establish a child  care  center  for  the  Nassau
Family Court and co-founded the Long Island Bail Commission; and

  WHEREAS,  This  remarkable  woman  also  served as Vice Chair of the
Nassau County Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union  and  formed
both  the  Long  Island Chapter of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty
and New Yorkers Against Violence; and

  WHEREAS, Through her hard work and perseverance, Muriel Neufeld  was
a  pillar  in  her  community,  proudly serving as a role model for all,
especially her two sons; and

  WHEREAS, Rare indeed  is  the  impressive  dedication  shown  by  an
individual  for  the  benefit  of  others which Muriel Neufeld displayed
throughout her life; and

  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense  of  this  Legislative  Body  that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are  brought  to  our
attention,  they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
congratulate  Muriel  Neufeld  posthumously  upon  the occasion of being
inducted into the 26th Annual May W. Newburger Women's Roll of Honor  by
the  Town  of  North  Hempstead,  in  conjunction with the observance of
Women's History Month; and be it further

  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to the family of Muriel Neufeld.
