STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 7459 2021-2022 Regular Sessions IN ASSEMBLY May 10, 2021 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. WALKER -- read once and referred to the Committee on Election Law AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation to enacting the young adult voter registration act The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the "young 2 adult voter registration act". 3 § 2. The election law is amended by adding a new section 5-231 to read 4 as follows: 5 § 5-231. Young adult voter registration. 1. Registration of voters. 6 Each public high school within the state shall make available during the 7 school year to all students such materials as may be published by the 8 board of elections relating to voter registration and, where appropri- 9 ate, shall provide applications for registration and enrollment, and may 10 assist in the execution of such applications. 11 2. Registration of young adults. Each school district shall distrib- 12 ute a voter registration form to any student seventeen years old or 13 older that will be eighteen years old at the time of the next general 14 election. 15 3. Forms to be available at school. The state education department 16 shall ensure that voter registration forms provided by the board of 17 elections are available in the main or central office of each high 18 school under the jurisdiction of the department for students who wish to 19 obtain one. The department shall also ensure that each such high school 20 provides adequate notice to its students of the availability of such 21 forms in its main or central office. 22 4. Sufficient quantity of forms. The department shall request from the 23 board of elections a sufficient quantity of voter registration forms to 24 meet the requirements of this section. 25 § 3.
