LEVENBERG, McDONOUGH -- read once and referred to the Committee on Education -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to developing grow your own initiatives at school districts and boards of cooperative educa- tional services The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the "teach- 2 ers and educators aiding the communities they call home (TEACH) act". 3 § 2. Section 305 of the education law is amended by adding a new 4 subdivision 60 to read as follows: 5 60. The commissioner, in consultation with institutions of higher 6 education, shall issue guidance for school districts and boards of coop- 7 erative educational services to use to develop grow your own initiatives 8 aimed at attracting underrepresented candidates into the teaching 9 profession. Such guidance shall include but not be limited to: 10 (a) ways to recruit underrepresented candidates, including those who 11 are current teaching assistants and current students in teacher prepara- 12 tion programs; 13 (b) initiatives aimed at creating an early recruitment pipeline begin- 14 ning in secondary school; 15 (c) how to establish partnerships between school districts, communi- 16 ty-based organizations, and institutions of higher education to encour- 17 age and support underrepresented candidates to enter and remain in the 18 teaching profession; and EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [] is old law to be omitted. This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after 5 it shall have become a law.
