An Act directing the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to designate the Garden State Parkway as a memorial highway in honor of Americans who were prisoners of war or are missing in action and supplementing P.L.1948, c.454 (C.27:23-1 et seq.).
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is directed to designate the Garden State Parkway as a memorial highway in honor of American service men and women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States who were prisoners of war or are missing in action. The authority shall construct, install and maintain appropriate markers, plaques, landscaping, arboreal ornamentation and incidental facilities that would serve to properly educate and inform the public of this designation and provide the honor for which the designation was made in a dignified and respectful manner. The construction and installations shall be in locations along the Garden State Parkway as shall be deemed suitable and appropriate by the authority. The authority shall consult, from time to time, with the Blue Star Memorial Highway Council, created pursuant to P.L.1999, C.120 (C.27:1A-5.16), for advice on the construction, installation and maintenance of the appropriate markers, plaques, landscaping, arboreal ornamentation and incidental facilities.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill directs the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to designate the Garden State Parkway as a memorial highway in honor of American service men and women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States and were prisoners of war or are missing in action. The authority is required to construct, install and maintain appropriate markers, plaques, landscaping, arboreal ornamentation and incidental facilities, in consultation with the Blue Star Memorial Highway Council, that would serve to properly educate and inform the public of this designation and provide the honor for which the designation was made, in a dignified and respectful manner. The construction and installations are to be in locations along the Garden State Parkway that are deemed suitable and appropriate by the authority.
