Senate Concurrent Resolution 640

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LANIER HIGH SCHOOL "LADY BULLDOGS" BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH JONAS JAMES FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR ITS PERFECT SEASON.

WHEREAS, how many times have you heard it?  "Nobody's perfect."  Well, guess what?  Somebody is.  The Lanier High School "Lady Bulldogs" Basketball Team defeated crosstown rival Callaway 74-50 on March 5, 2011, to claim the MHSAA Class 5A State Championship and finish the season with a record of 30 wins, 0 defeats; and

WHEREAS, for the first time since 1967, the girls' Gold Ball is heading to 833 Maple Street.  Lanier High School finished the season undefeated and broke a 43-year title drought.  Ranked No. 2 in the Super 10 behind 4A Champ New Albany, the Lady Bulldogs (30-0) rolled to their biggest win of the season.  Since the Lanier girls last won the title, the boys have won 9, there have been 8 United States Presidents, about 15,700 days have passed and the average cost for a gallon of gas has risen from 33¢ to well over $3.00.  Point guard Dominique Brothern scored a game high of 21 points and center Kierra Jordan hit 5 of her 6 attempts, had 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Lanier; and

WHEREAS, Coach Jonas James' team thus becomes the only Mississippi high school team boys or girls, public schools or private to finish the 2010-2011 season without a loss on its record.  The Lanier girls were perfect at home and perfect on the road, and they saved their best game for last; and

WHEREAS, Coach James, formerly an Assistant for Lanier's highly successful boys Coach Thomas Billups, is no longer surprised by anything his girls achieve.  "All season long we never put a complete game together," James said.  "Today, until I substituted everybody in the fourth quarter, we did pretty much everything right"; and

WHEREAS, Lanier is the first MHSAA team to go undefeated, boys or girls, since Indianola Gentry's girls did it in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.  Some of the greatest teams in Mississippi high school hoops history couldn't win them all.  Forty-four years ago Lanier won its only other girls Basketball State Championship.  That team wasn't perfect either.  Those Lady Bulldogs beat Greenville Coleman for the Class AA Magnolia Association Championship, but then lost to Class A Heidelberg Southside for the Overall Championship.  Four members of that 1967 Championship Team attended the 2011 Championship Game; and

WHEREAS, the undefeated Lanier Lady Bulldogs roster is:  Dominique Brothern, Cortney Epting, Joi Jones, Bria McGee, Davista Tillman, Shaquillia Manuel, Essence Pulliam, Kierra Jordan, Taneisha Harris, J'Shunlyn DeLoach, Jessica Brown, Talisha Tripp, Dorcas Loggins, Lequita Stewart, Britney Colton and Shalondra Fleming; and Head Coach Jonas James, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special achievement by a perfect basketball team which has brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Lanier High School "Lady Bulldogs" Basketball Team and Head Coach Jonas James for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship, its first State Title in 44 years, and for its perfect 2010-2011 season, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach James and Lanier Principal Shemeka McClung, forwarded to the Jackson School Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
