Senate Concurrent Resolution 513
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC SERVICE AND MILITARY SERVICE OF COLDWATER, MISSISSIPPI, MAYOR VERNON JACKSON AS HE RETIRES FROM OFFICE.
WHEREAS, Coldwater Mayor Vernon Jackson has announced that he will not seek re-election. He has been a wonderful example for public servants; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Jackson is a Vietnam War Veteran. He was drafted from high school and served on active combat duty in Vietnam from 1966-1968; and
WHEREAS, he served one partial (approximately six months) and three full terms as Alderman of the Town of Coldwater, and was elected as Mayor of the Town of Coldwater in 2013; and
WHEREAS, he was educated in the public schools of Coldwater, Mississippi, and Waterloo, Iowa. He attended Northwest Community College, Delta State University and the University of Mississippi. He received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Education and Specialist Degree in Educational Administration; and
WHEREAS, his affiliations include:
· Member of Second Baptist Church in Coldwater. Member of Finance Committee, Deacon Ministry, Building Committee, Cemetery Committee and former Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher;
· Charter member of the Coldwater Optimist Club (served as President of the Club and Lieutenant Governor for Zone 9;
· Member of the Tate County Economic Foundation;
· Champion for Arkabutla Lake Field Office, Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District;
· Member of Coldwater Health Council;
· Member of local PTA;
· Member of local NAACP;
· Previously served as Scout Master for local Boy Scout Troop; and
WHEREAS, he is married to Bernice Jackson. He has two children, Cedrick and Loretta, from his late wife, Earline. He has two stepchildren, Trevor and Byron; and six grandchildren: Jalise, Myles, Kendel, Mason, CJ and Naomi; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend this record of achievement and dedication to all citizens in Marshall County, Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the legacy of leadership and public service and military service of Coldwater, Mississippi, Mayor Vernon Jackson as he retires from office, and extend to Vernon and his family our best wishes for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mayor Vernon Jackson, forwarded to the Coldwater Board of Aldermen, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
