House Bill 996

AN ACT TO PROHIBIT THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION FROM MAKING APPLICATION TO THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SEEKING A WAIVER OF REQUEST FOR FUNDING THAT WOULD REQUIRE A REVISION OF THE STATE SUBJECT MATTER CURRICULUM ALIGNED WITH THE K-12 COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS DEVELOPED BY THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS INITIATIVE; TO AUTHORIZE THE BOARD TO REQUEST AUTHORITY FROM THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO REVISE CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS THAT CONDITION RECEIPT OF FUNDING OR WAIVERS UPON THE BOARD'S ACTION TO REVISE THE CURRICULUM TO ALIGN WITH THE K-12 COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1.  (1)  The State Board of Education shall not apply for, seek or take any action to initiate the filing of an application for any federal education program, waiver or request for funding with the United States Department of Education or any other agency of the federal government, which, if accepted, would result in or require the board to revise the state subject matter curriculum adopted by the board to align with the K-12 Common Core State Standards developed by the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

     (2)  The State Board of Education shall take action to initiate a request with the United States Department of Education or any other agency of the federal government to change or amend any requirement or agreement which conditions the receipt of federal funding or educational waiver on the actions of the board revising the subject matter curriculum to align with the K-12 Common Core State Standards developed by the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
