AN ACT

To amend chapter 1, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to recognition of the Northern Chickamauga Indian Nation as a tribe.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows:

Section A. Chapter 1, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto one new section, to be known as section 1.198, to read as follows:

1.198. The state of Missouri hereby recognizes the Northern Chickamauga Cherokee Indian Nation as a tribe within this state. To the extent not inconsistent with federal and state law, the Northern Chickamauga Cherokee shall be treated as a sovereign with respect to internal tribal affairs, and the tribal council shall be the governing authority. The tribe shall continue to be subject to both the criminal and civil jurisdiction of the state of Missouri. Nothing in this section shall be construed as a recognition of any claim to land that the Northern Chickamauga Cherokee or any other tribe may have.
