    A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to name the section of State Road 224 from the city of Huntington to Interstate Highway 69 the "Gene Snowden Highway".

SENATE RESOLUTION No. 5



MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to name the section of State Road 224 from the city of Huntington to Interstate Highway 69 the "Gene Snowden Highway".

    Whereas, Gene Snowden was born and raised in Huntington County;

    Whereas, After graduating from Olivet Nazarene College, Gene Snowden returned to Huntington to begin a career in the insurance industry that spanned 40 years;

    Whereas, Gene Snowden also devoted much of his life to public service;

    Whereas, Gene Snowden's career in public service began with his election to the Huntington County Council in 1962;

    Whereas, In 1964, Gene Snowden made a successful bid for election to the Indiana House of Representatives, where he stayed for two years;

    Whereas, After his term in the House of Representatives ended, Gene Snowden was elected to the Indiana Senate, where he served his Huntington County constituency for 18 years;

    Whereas, During his tenure in the Senate, Gene Snowden held many positions, including serving six years as Assistant

President Pro Tempore;

    Whereas, Senator Snowden carried many important pieces of legislation, including legislation that created the Indiana College Tax Credit, which provides a substantial tax credit to individuals, couples, and corporations that financially support Indiana's institutions of higher learning;

    Whereas, After leaving the Indiana Senate, Gene Snowden returned to Huntington County and served four years as County Auditor and was elected Mayor of Huntington;

    Whereas, As mayor, Gene Snowden initiated the citywide cleanup program and helped establish a city-county computer system linking all public agencies serving the community;

    Whereas, In addition to his work in government, Gene Snowden helped establish the Huntington Optimist Club and served as its first president, served on the board of the First Church of the Nazarene for more than four decades, and volunteered for the Police Athletic League (PAL), the Salvation Army, Huntington County Historical Society, the Boy Scouts, Huntington County Leadership, Pathfinder Services, and United Way;

    Whereas, In recognition of his many contributions to his community and the state, Gene Snowden was awarded the Huntington College Foundation's first Distinguished Service Award; and

    Whereas, Gene Snowden has dedicated his life to improving the quality of life in Huntington County: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes Gene Snowden for his many accomplishments and contributions to the well-being of Huntington County and the state of Indiana by urging the Indiana

Department of Transportation to name the section of State Road 224 from the city of Huntington to Interstate Highway 69 the "Gene Snowden Highway".
    SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation and Gene Snowden and his family.
