RESOLUTION
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing Bishop
Emeritus John D'Arcy.
Whereas, Bishop Emeritus John Michael D'Arcy died
Sunday, February 3, 2013, the 56th anniversary of his first
Mass as an ordained priest;
Whereas, At 80 years of age, Bishop D'Arcy succumbed to
cancer that was discovered shortly after Christmas;
Whereas, Bishop D'Arcy led the Diocese of Fort
Wayne-South Bend for 24 years;
Whereas, As the Diocese's eighth bishop, Bishop D'Arcy
guided the faithful in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend
from 1985 to 2010;
Whereas, Always concerned with improving the quality of
the priesthood, Bishop D'Arcy stressed the importance of
selecting men who were spiritually mature, whom he
described as men who would make good husbands;
Whereas, During his tenure, Bishop D'Arcy dealt with the
nationwide shortage of priests by bringing in priests from
other countries to help staff local parishes, increasing the
number of local men who went to seminary, focusing on
education, working to raise teacher salaries in Catholic
schools, and providing financing for schools that served
low-income areas of the diocese;
Whereas, Bishop D'Arcy spearheaded the establishment of live television Mass for shut-ins and Vincent House, which provides housing for families in need, and established an endowment for the diocese;
Whereas, Known for being evenhanded and always willing
to listen to another point of view, Bishop D'Arcy continued
to teach and celebrate special Masses until his death; and
Whereas, Bishop D'Arcy dedicated his life to God and the
priesthood and faced life and death with a deep faith and a
complete trust in God: Therefore,
of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
the House of Representatives concurring:
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly wishes to express its deepest sympathy to the family of Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy and the thousands of Catholics whose lives he touched.
SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the family of Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy, Bishop Kevin Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, and the pastor of each church in the diocese.
