HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No.
________

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION to honor the accomplishments of Karen Freeman-Wilson.

    Whereas, On December 31, 2011, Karen Freeman- Wilson was sworn in as the new Mayor of Gary, her hometown, the first woman to be elected mayor in Gary's history, and the first black woman to be elected mayor in Indiana;

    Whereas, Ms. Freeman-Wilson has already been recognized by many for her "impressive" accomplishments, which include undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University, and tenures as a city court judge of Gary, as the Attorney General of Indiana, and as CEO of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals;

    Whereas, Ms. Freeman-Wilson has committed herself and her staff to running the Mayor's Office in the most transparent fashion possible, beginning with an open-door policy that will allow any interested citizen the chance to have a dialogue with her;

    Whereas, Ms. Freeman-Wilson's plans for addressing Gary's challenges focus both on winning "small victories," such as improved street maintenance, and on longer-term projects for Gary's economic development, including the

development of Gary International Airport as a rival to Chicago's Midway and O'Hare; and,

    Whereas, Ms. Freeman-Wilson's winning the mayorship of Gary has inspired new hopes for the city's success and prosperity: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates Karen Freeman-Wilson on being the first woman to be elected Mayor of Gary, and the first black woman to be elected mayor in Indiana, expresses the optimism of its members that Ms. Freeman-Wilson's tenure will see Gary revitalized, and wishes her every success in her work on behalf of her native city and her community.
