SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Merle R. Durnell of East Moline, who
4passed away on December 16, 2023; and
5 WHEREAS, Merle Durnell was born to Herbert and Elvyn
6Wainwright Durnell in Moline on January 26, 1930; he served in
7the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict; he married Frances
8Berg at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Geneseo on June 20,
91953, and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2006; and
10 WHEREAS, Merle Durnell retired from ALCOA in 1993 after
11more than 30 years of service; and
12 WHEREAS, Merle Durnell enjoyed bowling and playing cards;
13and
14 WHEREAS, Merle Durnell was devoted to his faith and his
15family; and
16 WHEREAS, Merle Durnell was preceded in death by his
17parents; his son, Herbert "Herb" Durnell; and his sister,
18Melba Spavin; and
19 WHEREAS, Merle Durnell is survived by his children, Jay

1Durnell and Mary (Dan) Carter; his daughter-in-law, Julie
2Durnell; his grandchildren, Mark (Crystal) Durnell and Amy
3Berry; and his great-grandchildren, Audri, Tyler, Gabriel,
4Katelyn, Jacob, and Anna; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7Merle R. Durnell and extend our sincere condolences to his
8family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
