| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Niolis Collazo, who passed away on May | ||||||
4 | 6, 2023; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Niolis Collazo was born to Orlando Collazo and | ||||||
6 | Nitza Rivera in San Turce, Puerto Rico on December 17, 1999; as | ||||||
7 | a child, she moved to Illinois with her mother and younger | ||||||
8 | siblings; as a student, she excelled academically, served as a | ||||||
9 | vocalist in her school and church choirs, and was regarded as a | ||||||
10 | volleyball phenomenon and a strong debate team member; she | ||||||
11 | graduated from Waukegan High School in 2018, and she earned | ||||||
12 | her bachelor's degree in social work from the University of | ||||||
13 | Wisconsin Oshkosh in 2022; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, After earning her degree, Niolis Collazo served | ||||||
15 | as a counselor and mentor for Youth Guidance's Working on | ||||||
16 | Womanhood (WOW) program at Edith M. Smith Middle School within | ||||||
17 | Waukegan Community Unit School District 60; she also coached | ||||||
18 | the freshman boys volleyball team at Waukegan High School; | ||||||
19 | during her tenure, albeit brief, she made an indelible mark on | ||||||
20 | students, student athletes, and staff alike; and

21 | WHEREAS, Niolis Collazo was an amazing daughter, sister, | ||||||
22 | niece, friend, coach, counselor, and confidant who possessed a |

1 | contagious smile and a kind, sweet soul; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Niolis Collazo was known for her activism, | ||||||
3 | advocacy, and empathy, and she will be remembered as a bright, | ||||||
4 | shining light who illuminated the world of those who knew and | ||||||
5 | loved her; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Niolis Collazo is survived by her father; her | ||||||
7 | mother; her stepfather, Terry Joiner; her siblings, Joseph | ||||||
8 | Acosta, Mia Carani, Edier Collazo, and Yadier Collazo; her | ||||||
9 | stepsiblings, Lexy, Bradlee, Imani, Zackary, and Jacob Joiner; | ||||||
10 | her nephews, Jayden and Devin Parikh; and a host of family | ||||||
11 | members, friends, colleagues, and students; therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
14 | Niolis Collazo and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
15 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
16 | further

17 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
18 | presented to the family of Niolis Collazo as an expression of | ||||||
19 | our deepest sympathy.
