SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Michael Neil Smith, who passed away on
4January 7, 2023; and
5 WHEREAS, Michael Smith was born to Neil and Barbara Smith
6in Vandalia on September 28, 1967; he obtained a degree in
7Business Administration from Greenville College, known today
8as Greenville University, in Greenville; he later earned a
9teaching certificate, a master's degree, and a specialist
10degree in Educational Administration from Eastern Illinois
11University; and
12 WHEREAS, Michael Smith first worked for the Keebler
13Company and Prudential Financial while coaching basketball at
14St. Elmo High School; after earning his teaching certificate,
15he taught junior high school history and high school business
16while coaching junior high and high school basketball in
17Oakland, where he later became the K-12 principal and finally
18the superintendent; he also served as the superintendent at
19the Tuscola and Beardstown School Districts; and
20 WHEREAS, Michael Smith loved setting goals for himself,
21including learning to swim as an adult, training for and
22running multiple half-marathons, studying Spanish with daily

1practice, donating blood five times a year, and golfing once a
2month for 46-consecutive months; he had his own brand of humor
3that made life fun; and
4 WHEREAS, Michael Smith is survived by his wife of 27
5years, Shannon (Brachbill); his parents; his daughter, Ashton;
6his sisters, Nancy Mills and Cathy (Curt) Strange; his many
7relatives and friends; and his dog, Baxter; therefore, be it
8 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Michael Neil Smith and extend our sincere condolences to his
11family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
12further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Michael Smith as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
