Bill Title: Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that, in the case of an electric vehicle owner who is eligible for military series registration plates, instead of a distinctive electric vehicle registration plate, the Secretary of State may require an electric vehicle decal to be displayed on any military series registration plate otherwise available for motor vehicles of the same class as the electric vehicle.

625 ILCS 5/3-805 from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-805

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. 1 AN ACT concerning transportation.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5Section 3-805 as follows:
6 (625 ILCS 5/3-805) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-805)
7 Sec. 3-805. Electric vehicles. The Until January 1, 2020,
8the owner of a motor vehicle of the first division or a motor
9vehicle of the second division weighing 8,000 pounds or less
10propelled by an electric engine and not utilizing motor fuel,
11may register such vehicle for a fee not to exceed $35 for a
122-year registration period. The Secretary may, in his
13discretion, prescribe that electric vehicle registration
14plates be issued for an indefinite term, such term to
15correspond to the term of registration plates issued generally,
16as provided in Section 3-414.1. In no event may the
17registration fee for electric vehicles exceed $18 per
18registration year. Beginning on January 1, 2020, the
19registration fee for these vehicles shall be equal to the fee
20set forth in Section 3-806 for motor vehicles of the first
21division, other than Autocycles, Motorcycles, Motor Driven
22Cycles, and Pedalcycles. In addition to the registration fees,
23the Secretary shall assess an additional $100 per year in lieu

1of the payment of motor fuel taxes. $1 of the additional fees
2shall be deposited into the Secretary of State Special Services
3Fund and the remainder of the additional fees shall be
4deposited into the Road Fund. The Secretary, in the Secretary's
5discretion, may prescribe that electric vehicle registration
6plates be issued for an indefinite term, such term to
7correspond to the term of registration plates issued generally,
8as provided in Section 3-414.1. In the case of an electric
9vehicle owner who is eligible for military series registration
10plates, instead of a distinctive electric vehicle registration
11plate, the Secretary may require an electric vehicle decal to
12be displayed on any military series registration plate
13otherwise available for motor vehicles of the same class as the
14electric vehicle.
