1 | AN ACT concerning education.
| ||||||
2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
| ||||||
3 | represented in the General Assembly:
| ||||||
4 | Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the | ||||||
5 | Elimination of Racially Derogatory Language Act.
| ||||||
6 | Section 5. Definitions. As used in this Act:
| ||||||
7 | "Public body" means a legislative, executive, | ||||||
8 | administrative, or advisory body of this State, a State | ||||||
9 | university or community college, a county, township, | ||||||
10 | municipality, school district, or any other municipal | ||||||
11 | corporation, board, bureau, committee, or commission of this | ||||||
12 | State, any subsidiary body of any of the foregoing, including, | ||||||
13 | but not limited to, a committee or subcommittee thereof, or a | ||||||
14 | School Finance Authority created under Article 1E of the | ||||||
15 | School Code.

16 | "Racial slur" means any word or phrase used as an | ||||||
17 | insulting and contemptuous or otherwise negative term for a | ||||||
18 | racial or ethnic group.

19 | Section 10. Display of racially derogatory language | ||||||
20 | prohibited. No public body may display any racially derogatory | ||||||
21 | language, including racial slurs, within its building, on its | ||||||
22 | property, or at a public meeting at any time. Uses of racially |

1 | derogatory language in literature, for educational purposes, | ||||||
2 | or as an essential component of the work performed by the | ||||||
3 | public body are excluded from this Act.
