SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE STATE'S COMMITMENT TO HONORING HAWAII'S role in developing the national space program by exploring further opportunities to support AND FUND hawaii-based companies that are carrying out innovative scientific research.
WHEREAS, for more than fifty years, Hawaii has played a critical role in developing and supporting our national space program; and
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii, Hawaii-based companies and Hawaii-based members of the United States military have trained astronauts, developed world-class observatories, expanded satellite communications, enhanced environmental monitoring and deep-space surveillance, and made other contributions to national and global space exploration; and
WHEREAS, in 1969, Kokee Tracking Station on the island of Kauai provided voice relay and telemetry data communications between the Apollo 11 astronauts and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's mission control center in Houston, Texas; and
WHEREAS, astronauts have carried out training missions on Halemaumau crater, Kapoho, Kilauea Iki crater, Aloi and Alea craters, Kilauea Hualalai volcano, Mauna Kea volcano, and Mauna Loa volcano; and
WHEREAS, in 2003, Expedition 7 astronaut Ed Lu commemorated Hawaii's contributions to space exploration by wearing an aloha shirt and demonstrating the Hawaiian percussive instrument puili sticks aboard the International Space Station; and
WHEREAS, the State's continued support for Hawaii-based companies that are innovating in fields like space science and robotics is a way to honor and build on this legacy; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Legislature expresses the State's commitment to honoring Hawaii's role in developing the national space program by exploring further opportunities to support and fund Hawaii-based companies that are carrying out innovative scientific research; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that examples of the types of technology and projects the State should support and consider providing funding for include moon exploration, tele-robotic systems, communication networks, cis-lunar positioning and navigation systems, and prototype lunar architectures; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration; Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; Governor; Lieutenant Governor; Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; and President of the University of Hawaii.
