A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to the waikiki aquarium.
BE IT
ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the Waikiki aquarium is designated as the official state aquarium for the State. Additional staff would allow expansion of its Hawaii-focused marine education programs by:
(1) Improving and expanding Hawaii-related marine educational material available to visitors;
(2) Increasing the diversity and number of education programs offered by the Waikiki aquarium;
(3) Increasing the number of resident school groups it can accommodate in its education classes and programs;
(4) Improving the community's understanding of marine issues facing Hawaii and how to resolve them; and
(5) Raising the output profile of the Waikiki aquarium as a leader in marine education and conservation.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for two full-time equivalent positions for the Waikiki aquarium.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $150,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2019-2020 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2020-2021 for to be deposited into the state aquarium special fund established pursuant to section 304A-2165, Hawaii Revised Statutes.
SECTION 3. There is appropriated out of the state aquarium special fund the sum of $150,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2019-2020 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2020-2021 for two full-time equivalent (2.0 FTE) positions as follows:
(1) $90,000 for a head of the education department/associate director of the aquarium position; and
(2) $60,000 for an ocean scientist position.
The sums appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2019.
