A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the state archives contain records and primary source documents relating to the rich culture and history of Hawaii and Native Hawaiians.  The legislature further finds that there is a need to digitize these records and documents to preserve their historic value and make them easily accessible to the public.

     The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the state archives to establish two part-time project-based research archivist positions to provide research services, digitize project records, and make relevant records and primary source documents available to the public.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2020-2021 for the establishment of two part-time project-based research archivist positions in the Hawaii state archives to perform the following duties:

     (1)  Provide research services to search, retrieve, duplicate, provide, and make accessible relevant primary source documents in the public archives, such as laws, land recordings, maps, correspondence, broadsides, photographs, and contracts, and provide public online access to such documents; and

     (2)  Digitize project records and make them accessible to the public in order to provide a broader historical context to specific areas of discussion.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of accounting and general services for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2020.
