A RESOLUTION


Celebrating the semisesquicentennial anniversary of the Georgia Tech Research Institute; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the year 2009 marks the 75th anniversary of the Georgia Tech Research Institute's (GTRI) creation in April of 1934, when it was formed and funded by the Georgia General Assembly under the Georgia Board of Regents; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Tech Research Institute was known as the State Engineering Experiment Station until 1984; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia General Assembly formed GTRI to help develop Georgia's resources, industries, and commerce and to assist with national programs of science, technology, and preparedness; and

WHEREAS, the institute has grown from three researchers with a budget of $12,000 to nearly 1,300 employees performing more than $185 million in research and development annually; and

WHEREAS, GTRI is an integral part of the Georgia Institute of Technology, serving as a vital contributor to Georgia Tech's mission to be defined as the technological research university of the 21st century and to educate the leaders of a technologically driven world; and

WHEREAS, the objective of GTRI is to execute a synergistic model of research, innovation, and education and use this model to solve the significant problems of a complex world; and

WHEREAS, GTRI's economic impact on Georgia has been profound, as illustrated by its incubation of Scientific Atlanta and by its continued innovation on behalf of the food processing industry; and
WHEREAS, GTRI has provided invaluable services to state agencies to improve education and to protect its citizens; and

WHEREAS, GTRI has provided real world educational experiences to thousands of students since its inception, including serving as the largest employer of cooperative education students from the University System of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the anniversary celebration is an opportunity to recognize the outstanding dedication and contribution of the Georgia Tech Research Institute to the public interest of Georgia and the United States, and it is fitting and proper to recognize this historic achievement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the Georgia Tech Research Institute for its significant contributions during its 75 years of existence in the State of Georgia and extend congratulations on the institute's celebration of its semisesquicentennial anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Vice President of the Georgia Institute of Technology and GTRI Director Dr. Stephen E. Cross, on behalf of the women and men of the Georgia Tech Research Institute.
