A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. Harvey Millard Johnson III; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. Harvey Millard Johnson III on July 15, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was born on August 4, 1923, in Atlanta, Georgia, a beloved son of Harvey and Cora Johnson; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Army, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans during World War II; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Mr. Johnson attended Morris Brown College before serving in the military and completed his studies to earn a bachelor's degree from the Tuskegee Institute; and

WHEREAS, he had a distinguished 32 year career with the United States Postal Service, served as a salesman with J.T. Bickers Realty Company, founded the Atlanta Mortgage and Brokerage Company, and formed LBJ, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Johnson joined the congregation of Central United Methodist Church as a child and served on the church's Usher Board for a number of years as an adult; and

WHEREAS, he was a Golden Life member of the NAACP and was member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the Joymen Social Club, the Harlan Terrace Community Club, the National Association of Postal Supervisors, Empire Real Estate Board, and the Atlanta Tuskegee Club; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was united in love and marriage for 59 wonderful years to the late Ruby Abbott Johnson and was blessed with a remarkable son, Harvey, and two wonderful grandchildren, Mia and Erin; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Johnson will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal father, grandfather, uncle, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Harvey Millard Johnson III and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Harvey Millard Johnson III.
