A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Darnella Shell Jones; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mrs. Darnella Shell Jones on July 19, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones was born on December 21, 1927, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Johnson and Lemmie Shell; and

WHEREAS, this great Georgian graduated from Washington High School in Fulton County, Georgia, in 1946; and

WHERAS, this devout woman was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church North, participating in the Matron's Ministry, the Terry West Bible School Class, the D.T. George Gospel Choir, the Antioch Adult Choir, the Choir #1, and the Culinary Ministry; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones was united in love and marriage for 55 years to the late Reverend Joseph Jones, Sr., and the couple was blessed with seven faithful and loving children: Reverend Sandra Jewell Williams, Joseph Jones, Jr., Johnny Lee Jones, Larry R. Jones, Kenneth Earl Jones, Michael Jerome Jones, and Sheila Diane Jones; and

WHEREAS, during her life, Mrs. Jones dedicated over 35 years to the Atlanta Public School System and was a proud member of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Union; and

WHEREAS, a woman who gave selflessly of her time to others, Mrs. Jones was awarded the Citizen Volunteer Award from Fulton County in 1999 for her volunteer work with the Harriet G. Darnell Senior Multi-purpose center, her service as a Poll Manager for Fulton County elections, and her work with the Fulton County Democratic Party Executive Committee and the State Committee of the Democratic Party of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, she leaves behind many who will cherish her memory and the wonderful times shared, including her seven children, 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and loyal friends; and

WHEREAS, all who were privileged to know this distinguished Georgian join her family in mourning her loss.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body hereby joins in honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Darnella Shell Jones and expressing its appreciation of her many contributions to her community and the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Jones's family.
