A RESOLUTION


Commending the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia was founded in 1912 as the School of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, the Terry College is the flagship business school in the State of Georgia and one of 16 schools and colleges at the oldest state-chartered university in the country; and

WHEREAS, the University of Georgia was the first Southern university, and one of the first in the nation, to establish a school of business; and

WHEREAS, the Terry College aspires to a vision of national prominence and makes good on that promise by dedication to delivering top-quality instruction and supporting its outstanding faculty in the production of impactful research and public service initiatives that meet the needs of the business community of Georgia and beyond; and

WHEREAS, consistently ranked among the top business schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report and other college guides, the Terry College is home to several nationally ranked programs, including insurance, real estate, management information systems, accounting, and marketing; and

WHEREAS, during its first decade, the Terry College conferred 16 academic degrees, in the last decade that total exceeds 16,000, and since its establishment has awarded nearly 65,000 academic degree in 14 disciplines, including 53,000 bachelor's degrees, 6,400 MBAs, and 800 PhDs; and

WHEREAS, 69 percent of its graduates live and work in Georgia, almost one-half of the fastest growing businesses that are owned or operated by UGA alumni are led by Terry College graduates, and these graduates contribute their skills, knowledge, and experience in 3,800 cities, 50 states, and 80 countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, the Terry College has earned numerous accolades, including being ranked 18th in the United States and 22nd in the world in Bloomberg Businessweek's 2011 ranking of Executive MBA programs, ranked tenth by corporate recruiters in Business Week's ranking of MBA programs, and ranked among the top ten public schools and 23rd in the United States by the Financial Times for the evening MBA program; and

WHEREAS, the graduating class in both the bachelor's and master's accounting programs rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in their first-time pass rates on all four parts of the Certified Public Accountant exam, and the undergraduates majoring in economics have won several national scholarships, including the Rhodes, the Marshall, and the Fulbright; and

WHEREAS, the Terry College MBA program furthers Georgia's competitiveness by training future business leaders; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of the Terry College of Business be appropriately recognized during this memorable time.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia on the occasion of its 100th anniversary and its contributions to education in the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dean Robert Sumichrast.
