SENATE RESOLUTION 45

Recognizing the 50th anniversary of the National Wild Turkey Federation and its significant contributions to wildlife management, research, and habitat conservations.

Whereas, The National Wild Turkey Federation, Inc., was incorporated on March 28, 1973, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and in that same year, moved its headquarters to Edgefield, South Carolina.  The National Wildlife Federation is now the United States' largest nonprofit conservation education and advocacy organization with over six million members and 51 affiliated states; and

Whereas, Over the course of 50 years, the National Wild Turkey Federation has worked with state, federal, and nongovernmental partners including the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources of Wildlife Resources; promoted the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of our hunting heritage; and participated in one of the greatest conservation success stories in American history by preserving the wild turkey from brink of extinction; and

Whereas, The National Wild Turkey Federation, its members, and chapters have been at the vanguard of reversing declining hunting participation through nationwide investment in hunter recruitment, retention and reactivation efforts and partnering with states to develop opportunities to engage people from all walks of life in the outdoors tradition. Since 2012, the National Wild Turkey Federation has recruited and reactivated more than 1.5 million hunters; and

Whereas, The National Wild Turkey Federation has invested more than half a billion dollars to conserve or enhance more than 22 million acres of critical wildlife habitat, forests, and grasslands across public and private lands since 1985; and

Whereas, The National Wild Turkey Federation has invested more than $8.5 million in research throughout North America to ensure healthy wild turkey populations into the future; and

Whereas, The National Wild Turkey Federation is the largest and longest-serving nongovernmental stewardship partner of the USDA Forest Service, conserving habitat on National Forest System Lands including those in West Virginia, for more than 40 years and heavily engaged in the development and implementation of the USDA’s Wildfire Crisis Strategy; and

Whereas, The National Wild Turkey Foundation has been a longstanding partner to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, collaborating on habitat improvement, outreach to West Virginia’s hunters, and other matters benefitting the state’s wildlife resources and outdoor enthusiasts; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby recognizes the 50th anniversary of the National Wild Turkey Federation and its significant contributions to wildlife management, research, and habitat conservations; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the West Virginia State Chapter of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation.
