SENATE RESOLUTION 25

Designating February 7, 2023, as Sexual Assault Awareness Day at the Legislature.

Whereas, Sexual assault is a major public health crisis; and

Whereas, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report nearly 1 in 5 women in America will experience a rape or attempted rape from an intimate partner or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime, and nearly 44 percent of women and approximately 25 percent of all men encounter some form of sexual violence in their lifetime; and

Whereas, Sexual Assault Awareness is an annual campaign helping to raise awareness and provide education on the prevention of sexual assault violence; and

Whereas, Sexual violence cannot be eliminated by any one single person or entity on their own; and

Whereas, The West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services and the state’s rape crisis centers have been working collaboratively for over 40 years to provide quality services and create systemic changes to enable West Virginia residents of all ages to live free from violence and fear; therefore, be it

 Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate designates February 7, 2023, as Sexual Violence Awareness Day at the Legislature; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Senate is committed to treating this problem with the seriousness that it deserves and working to achieve solutions that deter, prevent, and reduce sexual violence; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the West Virginia Foundation for Rape and Information Services.
