15200078D WHEREAS, in 2015, Metropolitan Baptist Church celebrates 100 years of providing spiritual leadership, opportunities for joyful worship and fellowship, and generous outreach to the Petersburg community; and WHEREAS, founded in 1915 by members of First Baptist Church, Metropolitan Baptist Church originally met on Harrison Street in the Old Bush Building; and WHEREAS, Metropolitan Baptist Church relocated several times throughout the years, settling at its current location on Halifax Street in 1977; and WHEREAS, to better serve the growing congregation and expanding ministries, including a daycare program, Metropolitan Baptist Church completed work on its current building in 2010; and WHEREAS, Metropolitan Baptist Church has benefited from the wise and able leadership of seven pastors—Eli Tarte, J.L. Keiser, David A. Goodwyn, Bruce E. Mitchell, Leofric W. Thomas, Sr., William M. Bland, Jr., and Lamont A. Hobbs; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Metropolitan Baptist Church hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Lamont A. Hobbs, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for its contributions to the Petersburg community. |
