WHEREAS, Jackson P. Burley, a dedicated educator in Albemarle County, died on July 1, 1945; and
WHEREAS, a native of Stony Point, where he was born in 1863, Jackson Burley attended Hampton Institute and graduated as valedictorian in 1889; and
WHEREAS, fluent in Spanish, Jackson Burley taught at the Stony Point School for 12 years and the Eastham School for two years; he later taught agriculture at Albemarle Training School for 19 years, until his retirement in 1937; and
WHEREAS, Jackson Burley enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon; and
WHEREAS, in 1950, a new high school for African American students in Charlottesville, and the Counties of Albemarle, Greene, and Nelson, was built on the former site of the Burley home and named Jackson P. Burley High School; the school is now known as Burley Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Jackson P. Burley is fondly remembered by numerous family members and the students of the school that bears his name; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jackson P. Burley; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jackson P. Burley as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
