WHEREAS, Frances Price Ragsdale of Roanoke will joyously celebrate her 105th birthday on February 16, 2011; and WHEREAS, a native of Lexington, Frances Ragsdale was born on February 16, 1906, to loving parents William and Laura Price and was one of four siblings; and WHEREAS, an industrious and intelligent student, Frances Ragsdale attended grades one through eight in Lexington schools; and WHEREAS, at that time, there were no high schools available to Frances Ragsdale so she went to live with an aunt in Baltimore, Maryland, and finished her secondary education at Frederick Douglass High School; and WHEREAS, desirous to continue her education and prepare herself for a vocation, Frances Ragsdale then matriculated at West Virginia State College (now University), earning an A.B. degree in English and Social Studies; and WHEREAS, Frances Ragsdale pursued a successful and rewarding teaching career, including service for two years at the Gloucester County Training School, three years in Amherst County, and over three decades in the City of Buena Vista; and WHEREAS, upon her retirement from teaching, Frances Ragsdale moved to Roanoke with her beloved husband, Douglas N. Ragsdale, who passed away in 1975; and WHEREAS, Frances Ragsdale celebrated her birthday last year with an interview by a local television station and in the company of many devoted friends; and WHEREAS, over the course of her career, Frances Ragsdale influenced thousands of students with her passionate belief in the value of education and commitment to excellence; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates commend Frances Price Ragsdale on the occasion of her 105th birthday; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Frances Price Ragsdale as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her dedication to her profession and best wishes for a festive birthday celebration. |
