WHEREAS, Sharon Walston, an educator in Norfolk Public Schools, worked with local youths at Spiritual Life Family Worship Center to develop Suitcases for Foster Kids, an initiative to provide hope, support, and basic necessities to children in need; and
WHEREAS, Sharon Walston teaches kindergarten at St. Helena Elementary School, working diligently to give her students a strong foundation for lifelong learning, and she has inspired other local young people as the leader of the children's ministry at Spiritual Life Family Worship Center; and
WHEREAS, after three members of the Spiritual Life Family Worship Center children's ministry learned that foster children must sometimes use trash bags to carry their belongings, they approached Sharon Walston with an idea to raise money for suitcases and other items; and
WHEREAS, Sharon Walston helped the children build a plan for the project, which included hosting a performance in front of the church to raise money; and
WHEREAS, Sharon Walston and the children's ministry group put together several suitcases packed with toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels, and motivational messages and donated them to a local foster care facility; and
WHEREAS, an excellent role model, Sharon Walston demonstrated to the young members of Spiritual Life Family Worship Center how easy it is to give back to the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Sharon Walston hereby be commended for work to help young people in her community establish the Suitcases for Foster Kids program; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sharon Walston as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her accomplishments in service to children in the foster care system.
