Commending Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service.

WHEREAS, for 10 years, Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service in Northern Virginia has promoted breast cancer awareness and worked to provide access to breast cancer treatment and support groups for women in Ethiopia and Eritrea; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service was founded in 2013 by Veronica Musie after she and her late cousin were diagnosed with breast cancer; having benefited from a local support group, she realized how limited support for breast cancer patients is in Africa, and was determined to make a difference; and

WHEREAS, Veronica Musie sponsored a 5k walk/run to promote breast cancer awareness and ultimately raised more than $20,000 and led to the creation of Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service as an independent organization; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service strives to create a support system for women and their families in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., with teleconferencing available for women outside the region and in other countries; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service collects donations of breast prostheses, therapeutic bras, bra pads, head scarves, books and informative brochures, and other necessities to send to women at hospitals in Ethiopia and Eritrea; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service also has goals to purchase mammography devices for hospitals and partner with other nonprofit organizations to send volunteer radiologists to train other healthcare providers; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service has cultivated strong links between communities and agencies in the United States with those in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and it has supported hundreds of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the Horn of Africa over the course of its history; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service hereby be commended on the occasion of its 10th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alpha Breast Cancer Support Service as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's vital mission to create a world where every woman has the education and resources they need to detect, treat, and overcome breast cancer.
