HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 158
Commending the Honorable Charlie Caple, Jr.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 26, 2016

WHEREAS, the Honorable Charlie Caple, Jr., a respected community and civil rights leader, ably represented the residents of Sussex County as a member of the Sussex County Board of Supervisors from 1995 to 2015; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Caple worked to create new opportunities for local students by supporting the construction of new elementary and high schools, and in 1965, he was a charter member of what is now known as The Improvement Association, where he served on the board of directors for 42 years; and

WHEREAS, committed to safeguarding the lives and property of his fellow residents, Charlie Caple was also a charter member of the Stony Creek Rescue Squad and was an active member of the squad for 18 years; and

WHEREAS, as an active leader in the Civil Rights movement locally, Charlie Caple worked to empower African American community members by increasing voter registration; in 1970, he was appointed by the Sussex County Circuit Court to serve as the area's first African American Justice of the Peace; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Caple also served on the Sussex County School Board Selection Committee and was a member of the Sussex County Social Services Board for 18 years; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the community, Charlie Caple ran for and was elected to the Sussex County Board of Supervisors, where he represented the residents of the Stony Creek District for 20 years and served as vice-chair; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Honorable Charlie Caple, Jr., hereby be commended for his outstanding public service as a member of the Sussex County Board of Supervisors; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Charlie Caple, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his contributions to the residents of Sussex County.
