WHEREAS, John H. Smedley, Sr., the former Commissioner of the Revenue and a loyal servant of Warren County, died on August 24, 2012; and WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Front Royal, John Smedley previously held jobs as a real estate assessor, a tax assessor, an independent distributor for the Washington Post, and the owner/operator of The Blue Ridge Market; and WHEREAS, John Smedley went on to serve as the Commissioner of the Revenue of Warren County for 24 years, building a reputation as a conscientious public servant and a dedicated friend to the county and his colleagues; and WHEREAS, a highly professional constitutional officer, John Smedley lobbied in Richmond on behalf of Warren County and served as a past president of the West Central Commissioners of the Revenue Association and a member of the Virginia Commissioners of the Revenue Association; and WHEREAS, an enthusiastic supporter of the region, John Smedley was involved with a variety of civic groups and civic causes, including assisting the elderly and supporting the Warren County Fair; and WHEREAS, as a man who loved and expressed pride in his family, John Smedley often shared family pictures, including pictures of his cats, with friends and colleagues; and WHEREAS, John Smedley is survived and dearly missed by his beloved wife, Doris; children, John, Jr., Christopher, Desiree, and Jessica, and their families; and many other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant and a supporter of Warren County, John H. Smedley, Sr.; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John H. Smedley, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
