WHEREAS, Howard Arthur Pape of Charlottesville, a respected entrepreneur and a devoted philanthropist and volunteer who served and strengthened communities throughout the Commonwealth, the United States, and the world, died on February 28, 2016; and WHEREAS, a native of New Jersey, Howard Pape graduated from the University of Virginia in 1975 and served the Charlottesville community as a small-business owner and a youth athletics coach for many years; and WHEREAS, in 1999, Howard Pape cofounded the Building Goodness Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for workers in the design and construction industries to use their skills to help communities around the world; and WHEREAS, under Howard Pape's leadership, the Building Goodness Foundation has provided more than 115,000 hours of free labor to build homes, schools, medical clinics, and community centers; the organization has built and repaired more than 800 homes in the Charlottesville area and has completed projects throughout the United States and in Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa; and WHEREAS, Howard Pape and the Building Goodness Foundation provided relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Haitian earthquake in 2010; he traveled to Haiti more than 20 times, touching countless lives in the country; and WHEREAS, Howard Pape also contributed to cultural life in Charlottesville as a longtime volunteer and member of the board of directors of Live Arts; as the founder of the Scenic Guild, he built more than 50 sets for iconic plays and was a passionate supporter of the arts, who inspired others to volunteer at the theater; and WHEREAS, Howard Pape will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 38 years, Karen; his children, Jeremy, Evan, and Denis Mervil, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Howard Arthur Pape, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and volunteer and a pillar of the Charlottesville community; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Howard Arthur Pape as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
