WHEREAS, the Honorable Michael S. Irvine, presiding judge of the Buena Vista and Rockbridge Circuit Courts of the 25th Judicial Circuit of Virginia and an active community leader, retired in 2015; and WHEREAS, Michael Irvine graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and earned a law degree from the University of Richmond, then served the community as an attorney in private practice; and WHEREAS, in 1985, Michael Irvine became the Commonwealth's Attorney for Buena Vista, which was then a part-time position, and ably served the people of Buena Vista in that capacity for 19 years; and WHEREAS, in 2004, Michael Irvine was appointed as a judge in the 25th Judicial Circuit of Virginia, where he presided with great fairness and wisdom and was an admired mentor to several new judges; and WHEREAS, working to better the quality of life of his fellow residents, Michael Irvine volunteered his time and wise leadership with the Buena Vista United Fund, Rockbridge-Buena Vista Bar Association, Buena Vista Lions Club, and the local Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, Michael Irvine has preserved local history and heritage as a member of the Buena Vista Centennial Committee, director of the Buena Vista Downtown Area Revitalization Effort, and a former trustee of the Paxton House Historical Society; and WHEREAS, Michael Irvine also served as interim city attorney, worked with Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Rockbridge Area Community Services, and Alcohol Safety Action Program, and was an honorary member of the Buena Vista Rescue Squad; and WHEREAS, Michael Irvine lives his faith through his actions and enjoys fellowship and worship with the community at St. John's United Methodist Church, where he is a past chair of the church council, past chair of trustees, chair of the endowment committee, and a Sunday school teacher; and WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Michael Irvine served the community and the Commonwealth with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and distinction; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Honorable Michael S. Irvine on the occasion of his retirement as presiding judge of the Buena Vista and Rockbridge Circuit Courts of the 25th Judicial Circuit of Virginia; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Michael S. Irvine as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his years of service to Rockbridge County and the Commonwealth. |
